Frequently Asked Questions
Only the graduating cohort of 2021 have been informed of the various
activities happening in SMU Virtual Commencement. If you are in the
graduating class but did not receive our emails, please check the
spam folder of both your SMU and personal email on record with SMU.
Please whitelist events@smu.edu.sg so that our future communications
do not end up in your spam folder.
There will be virtual ceremonies with graduands’ cameras turned on,
and their names individually read out during the proceedings. For
more details, please refer to the ‘Live Virtual Ceremonies’ section.
If you are not part of the graduating class of 2021, you can still send a Dedication to the Class of 2021.
Order of Academic Gown

The gown must be returned between 2 and 28 January 2022.
In view of the fluid Covid situation, graduands must send the gowns to a pre-approved professional cleaner before it can be returned. Please check the gown vendor’s website for more details.
For graduands who are based overseas and would like their gowns to be delivered to an overseas address, please note that gowns are available for purchase only, and not for rental.

Dedications
You may do so in two ways:
- Post a photo or a video to your main feed (not to your story) on your Instagram account. Remember to set your account as public and include hashtag #SMUVirtualComm in your post.
- Create a post on the SMU Commencement Facebook page to be featured.
Posts with the hashtag #SMUVirtualComm conforming to the above guidelines will continue to be pulled onto the Dedications page until 30 September 2021.
Virtual Ceremonies
Only the graduating cohort of 2021 have been invited to sign up for the sessions. Please note that registration is now closed.
Check both your SMU and personal email accounts (and spam folder) for the emailer that will be sent out by 18 August 2021 with details on how to access the session(s) you selected. The Virtual Ceremonies are scheduled events, and graduates will only be given access to their selected session(s).
You are encouraged to wear your gown during the virtual ceremony, as this will be shown in your individual and group photo with the Dean, which you can download after the event.
SMU is pleased to absorb the local delivery charges of your graduation gown, for orders placed before 16 August 2021. This is to ensure that the gown can be delivered to you before the start of Virtual Commencement (for local deliveries only).

The recordings of all the Virtual Ceremonies will be made available on the microsite after the event. Please check back on the Virtual Ceremonies page after 27 August 2021.
Virtual Photo Booth
It will remain open till 29 August 2021.
You are welcome to participate and view the photo gallery.
Please check your camera privacy settings to make sure that the app has been enabled to access your camera, and also ensure that your camera is not concurrently in use by another program.
